Resale Value for New Apparel Gift Cards
GiftCardNexus.com recently posted data on gift card resale value and metrics for American Apparel, Janie and Jack, Juicy Couture, and Justice (Just for Girls). The transactional volume for these gift cards are averaging between eight to nine transactions per month on eBay for each brand, which is much lower than the more popular brands, like Gap and Abercrombie & Fitch. However, the resale value of these gift cards are inline with other apparel gift cards ranging form 85% to 90%.
However, Juicy Couture resale value is fairly low at 62%. Continue reading…

Facebook Gift Card Scam, 28 Days Later
Last month, we investigated how an iTunes gift card scam operates on Facebook and concluded that the scam can easily be perpetuated with other gift card brands. Sadly, this type of scam has spread like a fast moving viral outbreak in less than a month. Based on our unscientific polling of Google search results for “facebook gift card scam”, there were 283,000 results for March compared to 665,000 results for April. This is a two fold increase and more are people becoming aware of the scam.

Thousands of users have become unwitting victims of “free” scams that are pervasive throughout Facebook. Essentially, a “free” scam is an offer by the solicitor to award a free prize, usually something very desirable, in exchange for some mundane tasks, such as filling out a survey. Coverage Initiated on PGA Tour Superstore Gift Cards
PGA Tour Superstore, a golf themed retail store affiliated with the PGA TOUR and operated and owned by Golf & Tennis Pro Shop, Inc. (GTPS), has ten retail locations throughout Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, and Arizona. The stores offer high tech golf swing analyzers for training and simulators for customers to try out equipments. In addition, some store location have indoor tennis courts.

Initial data on transactions of PGA Tour Superstore gift card, also referred to as “Gimme Cards”, on eBay indicates that 45 gift cards were sold over the past 150 days with a median resale value of 74% and an average resale value of 72%. Walmart Gift Cards as a Barometer of the Economy?
Yesterday, Wal-Mart announced that their same-store sales rose only 0.5 percent in January, significantly lower than the expectation of a 2.0 percent increase. However, what was more surprising was that Walmart attributed the poor sales performance to poor gift card redemption. Specifically, consumers were spending gift cards on basic staple items, such as groceries and diapers, instead of on discretionary items, such as on electronics and DVDs.

The question is whether consumers’ gift card spending behavior is indicative of the economy’s poor health. Unfortunately, this could possibly be a such sign. Continue reading…
